Your Dog Needs a Spring Reset — Here's Why

Spring is one of the most lively parts of the year. The days are longer, the weather is warming up, things start to bloom, and we get back to longer walks and outdoor adventures with our dogs. But with all that good stuff comes a few things I've learned to pay attention to as a dog parent.

When the weather changes, most of us ramp up our dogs' outdoor time. More walks, more fetch, more rolling in the grass. That's all wonderful, but it also means more exposure to environmental stressors we don't always see.

Lawn chemicals are a big one. Herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers stay on grass long after application, and your dog is walking through it, lying in it, and licking their paws after every outing. A 2012 case-control study from Tufts University, published in Environmental Research, found that dogs exposed to professionally treated lawns had a 70% higher risk of developing canine malignant lymphoma. That's significant, and it's not a number to ignore.

Then there's tap water. Depending on where you live, it can contain chlorine, fluoride, and, in some areas, trace amounts of heavy metals or PFAS ("forever chemicals"). All of it gets filtered through your dog's liver and kidneys every day.

And if your dog is starting flea and tick prevention this time of year — topical or oral — that's also being processed through those same organs. I'm not saying don't use them (that's always a conversation between you and your vet). But holistic veterinarians often recommend supporting the body's natural detoxification pathways alongside these medications. The goal isn't to cancel anything out — it's to help those organs work as efficiently as possible.

Supporting Your Dog's Detox Pathways

One of the best ways to support our dogs through seasonal transitions is with quality supplements that include ingredients specifically chosen for detoxification. These aren't trendy buzzwords; they're plants and compounds with real veterinary research behind them.

Milk thistle is the standout. It contains silymarin, which is well-documented in veterinary literature for supporting liver function. It helps protect liver cells, supports the body's natural detoxification pathways, and has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Artichoke supports bile production, which is one of the liver's key mechanisms for removing waste. Turmeric and spirulina add valuable micronutrient and antioxidant support. Natural vitamin C from acerola boosts immune health during a season when the body is working harder than usual.

And gut health can't be overlooked. A prebiotic and probiotic combination helps stabilize intestinal flora, which matters because gut health is directly linked to detox. A healthy gut helps the body absorb nutrients and eliminate waste more efficiently.

This year, we are using NEKTON Dog Detox. It's made in Germany, and includes these ingredients and more! Stars like milk thistle, artichoke, turmeric, spirulina, acerola, and a symbiotic complex with prebiotic yeast cell walls (MOS) and the probiotic strain Enterococcus faecium, all in one easy-to-use powder.

Hydration Is More Than Just Water

When dogs exercise or spend time in warm weather, they don't just lose water; they lose electrolytes. Sodium, potassium, magnesium, and chloride all play critical roles in water balance, nerve function, and muscle function. Without them, plain water doesn't hydrate as effectively as it could.

Using a dog-formulated electrolyte supplement is always a great idea (but consult with your vet depending on your dog's specific needs).  NEKTON Hydration Care is a water-soluble electrolyte powder you mix into your dog's drinking water. It provides a balanced blend of electrolytes, plus dextrose and fructose for quick energy, B vitamins, vitamin C, and taurine. It's designed for short-term use, which makes it ideal for heat waves, active weekends, hikes, or any time your dog has been putting in extra effort.

PSA! Quick Word on Bloat

When your dog has been running around and is panting hard, let their breathing calm down before letting them drink. Gulping water too fast after exercise can contribute to bloat (GDV), which is a life-threatening emergency where the stomach fills with gas and can twist on itself. Signs to watch for: swollen belly, restlessness, unproductive retching, excessive drooling. If you see those — emergency vet, immediately. 🚨

Small sips, slow it down, and give them at least 30 minutes after meals before any vigorous activity.

Urinary Wellness

Something we don't often think about when it comes to our dogs is their urinary health. Early signs worth knowing about: straining to urinate, going more often than usual, discoloured or strong-smelling urine, excessive licking, or sudden accidents in the house. If you notice any of these, talk to your vet right away. But there are also ways to be proactive.

NEKTON Uro is a supplement that supports the urinary tract with DL-methionine (which helps maintain a balanced urinary pH), nettle leaves for normal excretory function, and glucosamine for mucosal support. It's a wellness supplement you can use proactively, especially during periods of increased demand.
